Drug rehabilitation is an term for the processes of medical treatment, for dependency on substances such as alcohol and street drugs such as heroin, cocaine, or amphetamines. The goal behind drug rehab is to enable the patient to put an end to substance abuse, in order to avoid the physical, psychological, financial, social, and legal consequences that can be caused.
Alcoholism is the excessive and consistent consumption of alcoholic beverages to the point that this behavior gets in the way of an individual's normal, personal, work, social or family life.
Substance abuse refers to the overindulgence in a psychoactive leading to effects that are harmful to the individual's physical or mental health. Substance abuse can lead to addiction or substance dependence.
Tolerance is a state of adaptation in which exposure to a drug causes changes that result in a decrease of one or more of the drug's effects over time.
Detox is a way to get rid of the body of toxins accumulated
by drug or alcohol use. Drug withdrawal is the first
step in detox. It is basically "the act or process of ceasing to use an
addictive drug." As soon as the individual has stopped the use of drugs,
behavioral and physical symptoms may arrive. Detox is a process that aids
in getting rid of the uncomfortable symptoms of drug withdrawal.
Usually, detox centers provide treatment to avoid physical
withdrawal to alcohol and other drugs. Finding a good quality detox program
may be difficult. However, quality facilities will not only provide the
individual with counseling during detox but help with the physical withdrawal
and the psychological root cause of the individual's addiction problem,
so as to decrease the chances of relapse.
There are three separate stages that detox can be viewed in, one of which
is medical detox. Medical detox requires a medical doctor
to supervise your medical withdrawal from drugs, making sure you finish
this phase safely and with very minimal complications. Another one is
physical detox, which is basically when your body no
longer is tied to drugs and now you have to work on building up your physical
health. Nutritionists are helpful in this phase as they can provide you
with tips on how to balance your diet. And finally there is emotional
detox. Detox can be extremely difficult on your mental, emotional
and social life, which is why you will need emotional help as you detox.
